Couverture "Rencontres à l'heure du Boeuf" © Sylvain Jolivalt - Ne pas reproduire ou exploiter sans autorisation

The Hour of the Ox is that time of night between one and three o’clock, when the yōkai – fantastical creatures from Japanese folklore – take over abandoned buildings, crossroads, bridges, rivers and mountains. And woe betide the wayfarer who has chosen one of these places, on the borderline between the mundane and the fantastical, as a night-time refuge! This book invites you to meet the most common yōkai: oni, tengu, kappa, dragons, snow women, ghosts, shape-shifting animals, and many more besides.

The book is divided into several chapters:

  • The masters of water, including the kappa (water spirits).
The kings of the skies, such as Fujin (the god of the wind).
The protectors of the mountains and the earth, such as the Tengu (mountain spirits).
    The Oni (demons)
Ghosts (Yurei), including the Ubume (a female figure carrying a baby).
    Shapeshifters, including the Kitsune.
Those that ought to be inanimate, such as the Tsukumo-gami (the spirit of old objects).

Maps, historical timeline and bibliography in the appendices.

Following the publication of my book, Mr Jean-François Sabouret contacted me to ask if I would write an article for the Asia and Pacific Network (CNRS/FMSH) website. These articles were subsequently published in the book shown opposite.
